The Moonlight Classic Seiser Alm took place Wednesday, January 23rd in South Tyrol, Italy; At 8 pm was the mass start of the Moonlight Classic; A cross-country night race organized by the Seiser Alm Tourism-board.

In the western part of the Dolomites, between the Sella Group, the Rosengarten and the Marmolada, is the largest alpine pasture in Europe. Cross-country skiing plays an important role here and the approximately 400 participants (limited number) had to face each other on a 15 km and 30 km track, illuminated by a 1000 torches. The Moonlight Classic cross-country night race is simply spectacular. Virginia De Martin Topranin, winner of 2018 stated: “This is the most beautiful cross-country race in the world”.

Nevertheless, both tracks are very demanding and the participants had to be prepared well for this challenge. As the name of the cross-country competition says it already, the race took place in the moonlight. Equipped with a headlamp, the track was allowed to run only in the classic diagonal style. Both the start and the finish were in the town Compatsch.

With a finish time of 50.49,3 the Czech Tereza Hujerova became the first woman in the 15 KM track, Hulbak Sollien from Norway became first with the time of 40.08,0 in the 15 KM men category. The winner of the 30 KM track in the women’s group was the Italian Sara Pellegrini with the time of 1:38.11,1 and the victory in the 30 KM men’s category was taken by the Russian Eugeniy Dementiev with the superb time of 1:27.40,8.

It was certainly an exceptional and unique cross-country race, in the heart of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage, on Europe’s largest mountain plateau, which will certainly have its sequel next year.
